Working with non-profits and NGOs for over 25 years Stephanie has held leadership roles with Friends of Liberia, The Garden School, The African Women’s Coalition, Kukatonon African Dance Troupe  and also as President of the Irvington Club.

While serving on the Board of the Irvington Club (IC) and with its approval, Mary Stevenson and I created the Community Involvement Committee (CIC) where I served as its Chair. The purpose of the CIC is to support organizations in our N/NE community and where IC members voluntarily assist with donations and/or activities.  The ICCF was formed as a response to what the CIC was doing but as a separate entity and also from other IC members who expressed a desire to honor the richness that the Club has added to their lives with a desire to give back to the community.

I am a husband, father and grandfather, and a retired lawyer. Our children grew up in NE Portland, often at the Irvington Club. Tennis has always been a part of my life, going back to attending what is now the U.S. Open in nearby Forest Hills, NY, while I was growing up in the 1960s.

The Irvington Club Community Foundation tries to translate a shared love of tennis into strengthening the fabric of our community, which I think is a very good thing.

I have been a member of the Irvington Club for over 44 years, first as a couple with my husband, then as a family, and now again as a couple, I and have been a resident of the greater Irvington neighborhood for even longer. Our family has enjoyed all aspects of the Irvington Club – tennis, the pool, the weight room, fitness classes and social events. Our three sons grew up in the Club, playing tennis, swimming and working as lifeguards at the pool.

Throughout these many years of membership, we have appreciated the recreational and social benefits of the Club and the strong sense of community that it embodies. The Irvington Club Community Foundation provides a way to show my appreciation for the Club by extending the Club’s spirit of community beyond the walls of the Club itself and to its greater neighborhood.

Origin and Philosophy

Some Irvington Club members had talked for years about forming an Irvington Club Foundation. This was partly out of a desire for members to show their appreciation for what the Club had meant to them through the years but also as a way for the Club to contribute to and benefit its broader community, and not be seen as just a private club with a limited membership

Development

Finally, in August of 2023, a group of members started meeting to plan and develop an Irvington Club Foundation. The plans for the Foundation were taken to the Irvington Club Board of Directors, which approved it in October 2023. As part of this process, a Memo of Understanding (MOU) was written to define the details of the relationship between the Foundation and the Irvington Club. All felt it very important to specify the Foundation’s relationship with the Club as associated but independent. Donations to the Foundation are not a requirement of membership in the Club, donations to the Foundation are not mixed with Irvington Club finances, Irvington Club resources are not used to support the Foundation in any significant manner, and the Foundation has its own board. The MOU was signed by then Club President, Jonathan Steinhoff, in November 2023.

During 2023, the planning group had researched the requirements for starting a 501(c)(3) and filed the necessary documents with state and federal agencies, including articles of incorporation, by-laws and application for a tax id. The Foundation was officially established on January 1, 2024.

Performance in 2024

The Foundation then began fundraising, established guidelines for the types of organizations that would be eligible for grants and came up with an initial list of 6 organization to which it would send grant applications. In October 2024, four grants of $1000 each were awarded to Kids ‘N Tennis, Ethos, the Community Transition School and Milk Crate Kitchen.

As the Foundation has become more established, the Board seeks to diversity its membership and welcomes inquiries from those who might be interested in joining Foundation leadership.

In 2024, contributions to the Foundation totaled a little over $30,000, and the response from the community has been positive and encouraging.
